"[Students] are exposed to a contemporary technological environment, and that experience transfers to a work environment," says Tom Mackey, dean of the Center for Distance Learning at State University of New York (SUNY), Empire State College.
Mackey, who has taught with web-based technologies for several years, has also seen how online degree programs have the potential to sharpen the skills that could eventually be used in students' dream careers.
"Besides learning the content in the courses they take, students are learning to work with other students in an online community," Mackey says. "Those skills make them stronger candidates in the workplace because we have seen how important technology is in so many fields."

"It's really important that (workers) know how to use technology and critical-thinking skills in health care administration," Mackey says. "An online course on health informatics is good for anyone who has to learn how to gain access to health information through the web."
Online Degree #2: Bachelor's in Business Administration
Dream Career Path: Budget Analyst*
Are you pressed for time but really want a chance to pursue a career in the world of business? With an online bachelor's degree program in business administration, you could prepare to pursue your dream business job when it's most convenient for you.
If your dream business career includes working with finances and creating budget reports, consider a career as a budget analyst, which typically requires candidates to have at least a bachelor's degree, and in some cases, a master's, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. "Working on laptops, mobile devices, and websites is incredibly important for (online) business students," Mackey says, noting how online programs can help prepare students for today's high-tech business practices. "And it's important that students can say (to employers) that they learned how to use technology."
Online Degree #3: Bachelor's in Psychology
Dream Career Path: Social Worker*
If you want to learn more about helping people cope with problems in their daily lives, you could take classes at home or on the road with an online bachelor's degree in psychology.
